Decoding the Language of the New Consumer: Gen Z’s

Old Jokes and memes aren’t funny anymore, drop them, because those won’t work on Gen Z! They laugh at different things.

They’re the first generation to grow up online. They’re socially conscious, environmentally aware, and have an aversion to anything inauthentic and they can spot fakes a mile away. So, how do we talk to them about our products in a way they’ll listen?

Here is how:

  • Authenticity: Gen Z hates fake stuff and loves realness. They connect with brands that have a genuine voice and social conscience. Think Patagonia’s environmental activism or Ben & Jerry’s social justice campaigns.
  • Memes: If you can’t make them laugh, you’ve lost them. Gen Z communicates through memes, slang, and internet humor. Understanding their language is key to creating content that resonates.
  • Shop Socially: Forget traditional celebrity endorsements. Gen Z trusts their peers. Influencer marketing with micro-influencers they identify with is a goldmine.
  • The Power of Purpose: Gen Z wants to support brands that stand for something. Environmental sustainability, social justice, and ethical sourcing are all buying factors.

But it’s not just about the message. Here’s how to deliver it:

  • Make it Short & Sweet: Attention spans are shorter than ever. Keep your marketing messages short and sweet, that’s “concise, engaging, and visually appealing”. Think bite-sized videos, interactive polls, and eye-catching infographics only.
  • Mobile-First: Go mobile or go home! (lol) Gen Z is glued to their screens, so ensure your website and marketing are optimized for a seamless on-the-go experience.
  • Transparency: Gen Z doesn’t trust opaque corporations. Be transparent about your practices, from sourcing to sustainability efforts.

Marketing to Gen Z requires a shift in mindset. It’s about having a conversation not bombarding them with messages. Understanding their values, language, and preferred platforms, can help brands unlock a loyal and engaged customer base for the future.
